Restaurant POS software: features to look for

Published 2026-11-01

A restaurant POS should connect the guest's order to the right table, kitchen station, bill and payment. Evaluate a system by the service your restaurant actually provides.

Floor and order management

If you offer table service, check how the system shows table status, assigns orders to waiters and handles moving or combining tables. Test dine-in, takeaway and delivery separately.

Confirm that item options and special instructions reach the kitchen clearly. Ask whether split bills, tips and service charges match the way your team operates.

Kitchen, payments and stock

Check whether kitchen tickets or a kitchen display can separate food and drinks by station, show order timing and notify staff when a dish is ready.

Test cash and mobile-money payment, partial payment, refunds and shift close. If recipes are supported, verify how ingredient quantities change when a dish is sold and how waste is recorded.

Reporting, training and cost

Useful reports may include sales by item, waiter, hour and payment method. Ask how voids and discounts are controlled and whether reports can be limited by role.

Compare plan limits, device requirements, support and setup time. Let a waiter and kitchen user test the system during a realistic service before changing the whole operation.
